This wonderful samaritan came to my rescue two days ago. He found me limping along a country road in Northern Laos - disoriented, confused and bleeding in the rain. My scooter lay somewhere on the road behind me, its motor still running after hitting a pothole and sliding out. He took me into his home.
As I hosed the mud off my wounds, the old man produced some antiseptic powder to stem the bleeding. He borrowed my glasses to read the instructions because he didn’t have a pair of his own.
Getting back on the bike before the post-crash stiffness set in, I rode to the local optometrist, bought three pairs of reading glasses at x1.25, x2.0 and x2.5 magnification, and returned to the old man’s home. After studying the palms of his hands through each pair, he chose the x1.25...
