I just spent 3 days away in tents with 66 10 and 11yos on school camp. It was awesome, but now I could really do with one of these as my throat feels (and voice sounds) like I’m snuggling broken glass!!!

Ghostly white, a reduction fired pourer thrown to a crisp edge, trimmed and coated with my base recipe that can fire anywhere between a stark white or grey depending on the heat it’s exposed to. When they come out like this it makes me want to work with porcelain again, a material I’ve haven’t touched for the better part of three years. Some of my best pieces in my opinion were made with it, unimaginably fine bowls, glazed with an oil spot entirely about from a hairline of the stark white clay body exposed around the rim. There are photographs of them I posted on here if you’re willing to scroll back far enough. I like stoneware, the specific clay I use is very stable and the colour it flashes when properly reduced is lovely, but even though I make the pots as thin as I would with porcelain they lack a quality of fineness only achievable with it.
Stoneware, no matter how much you refine it, burnish it, or sand it, which I never do save a quick run over with wet and dry to remove any burrs or specks of sand, will never be able to make glazes sing the way white gold can. A typical celadon glaze looks vibrant and almost fluid on porcelain, yet on my stoneware body the same glaze fails miserably in comparison.
It’s always been something that in the back of my head I’m telling myself I’d like to try it out again. Perhaps a range of the same shapes and ideas I’ve been making but with a slightly different glaze surfaces on some thin white pots. More than anything I simply miss the feel of throwing it, the smoothness of it and how easy it is to throw when wedged perfectly. My stoneware isn’t especially groggy but it’s noticeable, especially when trimming, the sand tears the turned surface and lines etched in often remain and must be dealt with.
