The Plaza was opened in 1907 when the first guest, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, was signed in by a grand welcoming committee. F. Scott Fitzgerald, who lived there with his wife, Zelda, in the 1920s, was advised by Ernest Hemingway to give his liver to Princeton and his heart to the Plaza. Fitzgerald set some scenes in the Great Gatsby at the hotel.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Guggenheim Museum while leaving in suite 223 at the Plaza in the 1950s, the Beatles stayed there on their first visit to America in 1964, and Truman Capote gave his legendary Black and White Ball at the Plaza in 1966.
Kay Thompson lived at the hotel while writing Eloise, her classic children’s tale published in 1955 about a little girl who lives on the top floor of the Plaza.
