Here’s one of my most recent paintings titled “A Mother’s Touch”. The figures came together quite quickly but the background was another story all together. I spent A LOT of time to make it look like it was painted without any effort. 😂In the end I think I like how it turned out but there were many days that I thought this painting was destined for the junk pile. As an artist it’s easy to get too involved in a painting. Sometimes I need to step away from a painting and come back a few days later with a fresh eye. It can make all the difference.

A day without laughter is a day wasted. —Charlie Chaplin
I spend most of my time around a camera behind the lens rather than in front of it. I love capturing people, moments, landscapes... anything I find beautiful or powerful. But above all else is the experience. I find it immensely important to fill my life with friendships and experiences that bring joy, growth, and fulfillment - only then do I try to capture those moments, otherwise they seem fake, staged, lacking integrity, clearly not genuine. Fake smiles and posed affection silently scream out from photographs, while true happiness and candid actions feel familiar and invite viewers in.
So when I see photos like this I’m filled with joy and am reminded that I live what I preach. While rock climbing in Eastern Washington last week, I let a friend use my camera to take some photos, and this is one of the gems I found. I never knew he took the photo, and whatever I was doing I was clearly having a good time and laughing as is far too common for me. Surround yourself with good humans who amplify your already happy life, and it will be fulfilling beyond measure. I am without a doubt insanely lucky to have found such an amazing group of humans to stick with me. 💛
