THE TRUE SECRET TO GETTING INVESTMENT: When I met one of my first investors (for my previous business Wallpark.com) in a hotel in London, his sons were in attendance and told me he probably won’t care about the idea, he’ll care about you, and sure enough, when he came in the room he arranged the chairs so he was sat facing directly in front of me, and I did my presentation and not once did he look at the screen, the whole time he was just focused on me and what I was saying. At the end of the presentation, he looks at the screen for the first time, takes his glasses off and says ‘Steve, tell me about you’, and I start talking and the minute I use the word ‘obsessed’, he says ‘stop’, and he says ‘I wish my sons had the same fire for something as you do for this’, and he left the room, and became an investor in my first company. My second investor told me he didn’t even know what the idea was, he just “knew I would do something good”. The important lesson here is that people don’t invest solely in great ideas, they invest in people. Ideas aren’t worth a thing. Execution gives great ideas all of their value. You’re your most important asset. Invest in you and one day investors will want to too.
