👥 Mingling doesn't come easily to everyone. Here are steps to ensure that you're an effective networker: 👥
️⃣. KNOW WHAT YOU DO: Quick! If I asked you right now what you do, could you answer me in 10 seconds? Most people can't. They hem and haw, saying "its kind of complicate. I used to do X, but then we had the merger and now I'm in charge of Z which means I..." Create a sound bite introduction that says clearly and concisely what you do, and for whom (your target audience). Practice it until it rolls naturally off your tongue. 😳
️⃣ LISTEN MORE THAN YOU TALK. The rarest thing in the world is a good listener. Pelople tend to talk far to much, especially about themsleves - surefire recipe to turn others off. Instead of worrying about being interesting, focus on being interested. Pay attention to the other person, listen to what they're saying, and ask appropriate questions. People are flattered by the attention, and you benefit from the added understanding you'll have of the person when they come to you for business reasons. 🤐
️⃣. OFFER VALUE: Bring something to the conversation. While you're listening to the other person talk, think about what resources you could refer to, or advice you can share. Could you introduce the speaker to a third party who might be the perfect contact? Do this in a friendly manner, not in a "I know everything" style. Funny stories, especially those related to business, are great ice-breakers. 🤝
️⃣. FRIENDS FIRST, SALES AFTER: Don't feel like you have to rush into business conversation. Hold off on the sales pitch. Concentrate instead on making friends and acquaintances. You're laying the foundation for relationships that will, hopefully, endure for years. Take sometime to really learn about the other person and create a favorable impression of yourself. 🤗
️⃣. FOLLOW UP; After the event is over, keep in touch. You’d be amazed how few professionals ever follow up with their networking contacts. They're too busy focused on making new contacts to preserve the older ones.
