At the top off the major difficulties around 6100m. We had planned to summit directly from Camp 1, but unfortunately I was moving slowly due to a wicked cough and it was getting late. We ended up turning back only 100m from the summit in the dark. The final exposed ridge was just too committing in the dark and with my waning energy we knew we had no reserves to deal with potential emergencies.
We spent the night in the crevasse on the bottom right of the photo under a emergency tarp. At least we had a stove and some soup to keep us going until morning! Climbing alpine style, we may travel light, but we always make sure to have what we need to spend an unplanned night out.
