-> Before the winter let out, the thing turned its gaze to three trees lit by white lights. He adored their glory. Through them in the distance the tower stood, more now than ever buried and smothered by offices whose lights were dull and yellowed like the lips and fingers of a chain smoker. Unlike these trees. He knew they were real lights, not the artificial electric abominations of humankind and the rest of what they had done to this once great city. -> The thing would rarely be seen, for it was too small. This was good, for it was ugly. The thing knew it. Were it life-size, like the investors and bankers and insurers and top entertainers, they would flee screaming and try to kill it. Recently, the thing appreciated this blessing. It could always go unnoticed.
